WHAT ARE FACIAL REJUVENATION PROCEDURES?
Face lift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that helps to remove the aging-associated sagging and wrinkles on face by stretching and hanging them. However, recently, all the aging-associated interventions on face have started to be called facial rejuvenation.
WHAT IS FACIAL AGING?
As people get older, the skin on their face becomes droopy, wrinkled, and there are various stains and irregularities on the skin due to the effects of years, solar rays, daily stresses and other factors (smoking, drinking and malnutrition). An old face has an appearance of forehead lines becoming clear, eyebrows falling, eyelids sagging, bags and lines under the eyes formed, deep lines in the mouth – nose area, sagging cheeks, missing chin contours, neck fat deposition and skin walls formed. The skin has lost its vitality; sun spots and other moles have appeared on it; it has become thin and wrinkled.
WHAT IS FACE LIFT PROCEDURE?
“Face lift” or “rhytidectomy” is one of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery procedures. Face lift-facial rejuvenation procedures remove sagging and irregularities on forehead, face and neck skin; the excess fat tissue is removed from the cheek and neck; facial fascias and fat tissues are pulled and hanged into their anatomical regions; the facial tissues are reinforced, the eyelids are corrected and other complementary interventions can be performed (Skin peeling, filling and botox).
WHO IS THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR FACE LIFT PROCEDURE?
Candidates, who are ideal for face lift, are people whose facial and neck skin has started to sag but skin has not yet lost its elasticity and who has not any other health issue. This surgery is usually applied to men and women over 40 years of age. However, such operations can be performed completely or limitedly at an earlier age due to the structural and genetic reasons. During face lift surgery, rhinoplasty and eyelids aesthetic, forehead correction, eyebrow plucking operations can also be added to make the face look better and younger. For thin wrinkles, the injection of filling material (fat, hyaluronic acid etc.) or peeling (mechanical, chemical laser) and botox for wrinkles can be performed.
FACE LIFT PRE-OP
When you have problems related to facial aging – sagging and you think of surgery, first discuss what you want and why you want it with yourself and then consult a plastic surgeon. Tell and discuss your wishes and expectations individually with your doctor. If you are a smoker, quit it absolutely 10 days before the surgery. Tell your habit of sunbathing and skin care to your doctor, do not forget to ask what you need to do after surgery to make the surgery last longer.
HOW IS FACE LIFT SURGERY PERFORMED?
The operation is performed in an operating room under the supervision of the anesthetist under the hospital conditions. Intravenous sedation (accompanied with tranquilizers) can be performed with local anesthesia as with general anesthesia. Such operations may take 3-10 hours, depending on the technique and the type of operation. It is possible to go home the same day, but it is usually best to stay in hospital for 1 night. Additional procedures (nose, eyelid, etc.) can be performed at the same session. Face lift surgery is not scarless. However, these scars are not noticeable because they are hidden. Scars are hidden in the scalp in the temporal region, in front of and behind the ear. If fat is removed in the maxillary area, a scar of 3-5 mm is left under the chin. If eyelid and forehead stretching are added, additional scars remain in the eyelids and within the scalp in the forehead. These scars are also mostly unnoticeable and concealable.
POINTS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT AFTER FACE LIFT SURGERY:
The post-operative early period is usually comfortable. There may be general swelling and a feeling of bruising, numbness and tension in the face. Mild facial asymmetries can occur as the facial nerves can be slightly affected from anesthesia at the time of surgery. They will spontaneously get over within 3-5 days. A cold pad is applied to the head bandage and cheeks, leaving the eyes, nose and mouth open. The silicone tubes, called drain, are placed in order to prevent congestion in the tissue. The drains are pulled within 2 days at the latest. The bandage is completely removed after 2-3 days. General inspection and dressing change is made. The hair can be washed. Sutures are removed after 5-7 days if not soluble.
HOW LONG DOES ITS EFFECT LAST AFTER FACE LIFT OPERATION?
It works well if it is done according to the operation technique. Rarely, second corrections may be necessary. The patient can recover and do her household chores since post-operative day 2. The patient can return to work and make up after one with taking down the swelling. It is recommended to avoid heavy exercises and excessive sunlight, be protected from external impacts for 2 months. The new shape given to the face and neck sometimes may last 5-10 years or for life-long depending on the nature of the person and the environmental conditions.
